Emergency Sirens
The Newton County Emergency Alert Siren is tested every Wednesday at noon. This will only be a test and no action is required. The Oxford College siren system will be tested at approximately 12:00 noon on the first Wednesday of each month, weather permitting. If the weather is questionable on any given test day, the test will occur on the following month on the first Wednesday.
Garbage and Trash Collection
The City of Oxford provides curbside pick-up for garbage, trash, recyclable items, and yard debris. Particulars and limitations of this service appear below. Further specifications appear in the city ordinance.
The City provides a 95 gallon wheeled cart for each residence for household garbage and trash, refuse which must be bagged prior to placing it in the cart. The City of Oxford’s scheduled pick-up day is Tuesday.
All garbage must be contained in cart. Items other than household garbage (i.e., cardboard, furniture, metal, tires, construction waste, etc.) should be taken to Newton County recycling centers. There are two centers within a mile and a half of Oxford: on Cook Road just before railroad crossing, and on Stone Road north of Oxford off of Highway 81.
The City also provides two green recyclable bins for each residence. Newspaper, cardboard, recyclable plastics #1-#7, steel/tin and aluminum cans, boxboard (cereal and cracker boxes), junk mail (magazines, catalogs, phone books), paper/paper bags, and cartons (milk, soup, juice, broth containers) may be recycled through this curbside service. Because the landfill situation has become critical, all citizens are urged to recycle as many items as possible. Recyclables are collected on Thursdays.
Residents are responsible for placing carts and bins at their curbsides no sooner than 7:00 p.m. the evening before the scheduled pick-up day. Likewise, residents are responsible for removing their own empty carts and bins promptly on the day of pick-up.
Litter along streets, roads, and highways has become an ugly blight on our whole society. We can all help tame this disease by picking up in our own neighborhoods at least. Litter gathered by citizens should be placed in garbage bags, which should then be deposited in the wheeled carts to await pick-up. If we all help, Oxford can be clean and beautiful.

Monday and Tuesday: Sticks and limbs less than 3" in diameter.
Wednesday and Thursday: Leaves and clippings.
Requirements
Leaves, brush, etc., must NOT be placed in storm water ditches to impede flow!
The landfill requires that trash material be separated by like kind and that no yard trimmings be mixed with other trash.
Please help us be more efficient by separating your piles of trash as much as possible
- Piles of leaves, grass, shrub clippings
- Piles of limbs, large sticks
- Corrugated Cardboard may be taken directly to the Newton County Recycling Center by residents themselves.
- Do not mix such cardboard with other trash.
Our City Ordinances address certain kinds of trash the city service does not cover:
- Tires and Batteries should be disposed of by residents through participating service garages.
- Discarded furniture, appliances, etc., will not be picked up by the City and may not be placed at street.
- Limit of one pickup load (6 cubit yards) per week of brush, trimmings, or limbs will be picked up by City.
- Disposal at street of more than 6 cubic yards of such brush and trimmings requires a permit from City Hall and minimum fee of $50.00, with agreement to pay all actual costs of disposal, up to $200.
- Stumps, Trees, and Limbs contracted for removal from private property are the responsibility of the private contractor or resident.
- Building Debris from repairs, remodeling, or construction is the responsibility of the private contractor or the resident.
Open Burning of Yard Waste
Leaves, brush, and trimmings may be burned on your own property at times allowed by the State Forestry Service. Call the Burn Permit number (877) 652-2876 to find out if burning is permitted. Open burning is usually prohibited between May and October during summer months.
Regarding LITTER
Oxford residents participate in Great American Cleanup litter pick-up events annually. Occasionally, we have community service workers doing litter pick up as part of court sentences.
City staff does some litter pick up before mowing rights-of-way. But we must largely depend upon citizen volunteers to help pick up litter along streets in their own neighborhoods.
Non-licensed Sales (Yard, Garage Sales, Etc.)
Citizens of Oxford are permitted to hold yard sales at their residences once every six months. Notification form of such sale must be filed at City Hall. Also, no persons may hold yard sales at any locations more often than once every six months. NO SIGNS of any kind may be placed at any time on City utility poles, trees, or stop signs. Temporary signs for yard sales must be on their own stakes; they may be placed no more than two days before such a sale, and must be removed immediately after the sale.
Vehicles, boats, mowers, etc. may be offered for sale for no more than two months at a time, and must be in operable condition and have a current license, if required. Notification of vehicle for sale must be filed with City Hall, dated and signed. (See also City of Oxford "Junk Car" Ordinance, which prohibits the storage of inoperable, unlicensed vehicles on properties in City.)
Annual Community Events For All Citizens and Friends of Oxford
February Pancake Supper
The Oxford Lions Club sponsors a Pancake Supper on the last Friday in February from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at MainStay Academy. There is a nominal charge for this "all you can eat" meal.
July Independence Day Parade
The City of Oxford and the Oxford Lions Club sponsor a 4th of July parade and the entertainment following at "Old Church" on Wesley Street. Monetary prizes reward parade entries in various categories. Bring your picnic or enjoy lunch purchased from the food concession stand, which the youth groups of Oxford churches run. The Lions Club provides watermelon & popcorn for everyone.
November Thanksgiving Service
The churches in Oxford sponsor a community-wide Thanksgiving Worship Service, held at Old Church on Wesley Street. See "Calendar of Events" on home page of City web site, and check local church bulletins for time.
