City Boundary Survey – Robert Jordan is continuing to work on the city boundary survey. He will be done soon, but here are some of his interim comments.
- "Based on preliminary information, I’d almost convinced myself that the monument location Jody pointed out at the 911 center was not an accurate city boundary corner. Then I found the original rock corner at the original northwestern city boundary, recomputed, and I have found that Jody’s monument location is very close to the predicted location and is very likely an accurate original corner. Success!"
- "One other note on the city boundary issue: Having no better data available at the time, I had made the assumption that magnetic north used by Thomas for his Oxford City Map in 1837 could be best determined by observing the centerline of N. Emory Street. But I now know that the centerline of N. Emory is rotated about 45 seconds west of magnetic north established by the original land lot corners, which were surveyed in 1821 are a more accurate reflection of the city boundary. Interesting – to a surveyor, at least."
- And in case you were wondering, I asked Robert what 45 seconds was.“Forty five seconds (45”) is ¾ of a minute and there are 60 minutes in a degree. So 45” is about 1.2% of a degree. Not very much. In the length of the city of Oxford, it’s about 5 feet horizontal distance.”

→ Oxford College Move-In Day – Move-in day for freshmen is Friday, August 22. Sophomores will move in Tuesday, August 26. Our police department will be working with the staff and the police of the college to minimize congestion. So, if you see some students waving down cars at Emory and Pierce starting at 8 AM on Friday, August 22, it’s just the start of moving in over 400 new students.
