Weekly Update 10/30/2015

From Bob Schwartz, City Manager

Oxford Road Water Repair – We had about a 15 foot section of 8” main split down the middle first thing Monday morning. Our public works department was able to make the repairs, but it took most of Monday in the rain. We were able to valve off all but about four customers during the repair so we did not have much of an outage.

GCCMA – I attended the Georgia City County Managers Association Fall Conference. One item we covered was cyber security. It has become a much bigger issue recently. It made me more appreciative of the work that Sophicity does to maintain the security of our PCs, servers, and network. We also heard that the GMA-ACCG study committee is getting close to making a final recommendation on a new formula for the negotiation of the distribution of the LOST proceeds. This will come up again in 2022, two years after the 2020 census.

Women's tennis wins national title - The Oxford College of Emory University women’s tennis team has captured the NJCAA Division III national championship. The title came this past weekend, as Oxford won seven out of nine championship flights during the tournament, which took place Oct. 22-24at the Peachtree City Tennis Center in Peachtree City, Georgia.

Oxford entered the tournament with a number-one national ranking, and the team lived up to that billing. The Eagles dominated play, winning all three doubles flights and winning singles flights one thru four. Says Roderick Stubbs, Oxford director of athletics, “This was despite the team’s being something of a David among Goliaths. Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Suffolk County College, the two teams finishing second and third behind Oxford in the competition, have enrollments of 9,000 and 26,500 respectively, compared to Oxford’s approximately 950 students.”

The women’s tennis team was coached this fall by Interim Head Coach Robert Hardin, filling in for Coach Pernilla Hardin. Although she has been away this fall on leave, Hardin was at the championships and to her surprise received the tournament’s Spirit of Competition Award, following a unanimous vote from the tournament coaches.

Coach Robert Hardin commented, “I am extremely proud of these young ladies for all the effort and hard work they have put into becoming champions and especially proud of my wife.” Coach Robert Hardin received the Coach of the Year Award.

Members of the tennis team are Liane Anderson, St. Charles, Ill.; Sarah Bailey, Lakeland, Fla.; Florence Chow, Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.; Hayley Keats, Potomac, Md.; Linda Lee, Franklin Lakes, N.J.; Kaia Ordal, Minneapolis Minn.; and Kelsey Sattler, Richboro, Pa. By winning the national championship singles and doubles flights, the Oxford team also garnered honors a First Team All-American. This is the second national championship for the Oxford women’s tennis program, with the first having been won in 2011. It is also Oxford’s second tennis national championship in 2015; in May the Oxford men’s tennis team also won the NJCAA Division national title.
