From Bob Schwartz, City Manager
→ Honorary Councilmember – Our honorary councilmember for February is Lisa Dorward appointed by councilmember George Holt.
→ Plant Vogtle – Wednesday, councilmembers Baker and Ready along with Jody Reid and Bob Schwartz took a tour of Plant Vogtle. It is the largest of the two nuclear power plants in the state and is partially owned by the MEAG membership. We estimate that about 28% of Oxford’s electricity comes from Plant Vogtle. It’s a huge plant. Oxford’s ownership stake is about 0.2% in Units 1 & 2. The Southern Company is leading a consortium that is building Units 3 & 4 to almost double the size of the plant using new reactor technology. Oxford did not purchase any of units 3 & 4 but on the tour we saw some of the huge construction project. They had to close all the roads between Savannah and Waynesboro to move some of the reactor components from the Georgia Ports to the site. Joining us on the tour were Holly Bisig, regional manager with MEAG and Jerry Ranalli, asset manager with MEAG. The reactor buildings for units 1 & 2 are in the background. We are standing behind a sample concrete containment wall for the reactor buildings including the reinforcing cables and almost 3” thick rebar.
