Weekly Update 5/24/2013

From Bob Schwartz, City Manager

Speed Limit and Speeding Tickets – Here are some interesting statistics. We had 48 tickets

for speeding in court for May. Of those, 42 were for speeding in a 35 MPH zone. The average

speed for which a ticket was given in the 35 MPH zone was 55.07 mph – that’s an average of

over 20 miles above the limit! The prize winner (so to speak) for the month was a ticket for doing

63 in the 35 mph zone.

→ Public Works Schedule – I have attached the report for this week and the schedule for next week(here).

of Oxford Way. She was appointed by Councilmember David Eady. Her tour will be Monday,

July 8. Dave and I will pick her up for lunch at Newton Medical Center (where she works) at

noon, go to lunch, and then bring her back to city hall. She will visit with the police department,

then with the Clerk’s office and then with Jody and public works. Either Jody or I will drive her

back to work by 3 PM.

New Police Officer– Chief Harvey recommended and I have approved the hiring of David Steward

to replace Chris Cass. We had nine applicants and interviewed five. Based on the interviews, work

record, and an extensive background and reference check conducted by Chief Harvey and Officer

Pilgrim we selected David Steward. Officer Steward will meet council during the June work session.

Here is what Chief Harvey said in his recommendation to hire:

After careful consideration regarding the nine applicants that applied for the Police Officer position, the

person chosen is David Steward. David has passed his physical and voice stress analysis. David has been

with the DeKalb Police Department for 26 years and is retiring in May of this year. David was in the military

before starting with DeKalb and served as a Military Police Officer. David was a patrolman in the Uniform

Division at DeKalb Police, an investigator in the Internal Affairs Background Unit, a Sergeant in the Uniform

Division, a Lieutenant in the Uniform Division, and a Lieutenant in the Criminal Investigation Division.

Not only does David come with high recommendations from his co-workers who I have spoken with, including

Clark Miller, but I have personally worked with David during my years at DeKalb Police. I feel David will be a

great asset to the Oxford Police Department and will help keep the department one that the city can be proud of.

David will begin working with the department on May 30th, 2013. David will ride with Officer Pilgrim for the first

few days in order to learn the boundaries of the city and operational procedures.

Elevated Tank – The negotiations with Verizon are going well and we should have a final contract ready in time

    for the June work session.

→ LMIG Street Patching – Cecil Key Paving has completed work on the $21,920 project for street patching. The picture

is W. Soule Street. We also patched West Bonnell, Wentworth, Academy Court, Collingsworth, E. Richardson, and

    Moore.
