From Bob Schwartz, City Manager
→ Oxford College Orientation – The students are coming! The students are coming! I know it
happens every year, but this is the first year I’ve seen it. Honorary Councilmember and assistant
director of residential life Walter Snipes tells me the college has 511 incoming freshmen. Tuesday
I met with Councilmember Pace, and two other Oxford College staff members: Honi O’Kelley,
and Kim David, to discuss ways the city could help with the orientation of new freshmen. We
came up with several ideas – and some of them involve city council.
o On Friday, August 16, we will host a lunch in our council chamber for the almost 30 student
orientation assistants. We will introduce them to the city staff including our Police Chief and
City Judge – and if you could join us, that would be great. Friday, August 23 is “move-in day”
from 8:30 until 1:30. Could you join us for this – and maybe sit at the city resource table – or just
meet and greet the new students and their parents?
o Friday, August 23 at 1:30 is the Official Welcome from Dean Bowen to the new students.
o Sunday, August 25 we have volunteered City Hall as a stop on the new students’ scavenger hunt
(Oxford College calls it “Operation Navigation”). I’ll open city hall from 2:45 until 5:30 as a rest
stop and water stop for what is likely to be many groups of about 20 very hot students. If you could
join me that would give you a chance to meet more of the students.
→ Whatcoat Street – Peter Drey, landscape architect, met with: Jim Windham, David Eady, George Holt,
Cheryl Ready (Tree Board), Mike Ready (Planning Commission), Myra Frady and Margaret Dugan,
Oxford College, Jody Reid and me on Thursday, June 20. He reviewed the current version of his design.
The group asked that he work on it some more, make a few changes, and fill in some of the details. We
will have another meeting as soon as Peter is ready – likely the second week of July.
→ George Street reconductoring project– The contractor – Marable – Pirkle has been working on this,
when it wasn’t raining, and should be finished soon.
→ New Oxford College Dorms Names– The Emory Board of Trustees have named all three dorms in the
East Village complex. The existing dorm on Hamill Street will be Elizer Hall named for Marshall Elizer who
was director of student affairs and later business manager. The existing dorm on Moore Street will be Murdy
Hall named for Bill Murdy who was dean of the college. The new dorm will be Fleming Hall named for Bond
Fleming who was dean of the college.
