From Bob Schwartz, City Manager
→ Northeast Georgia Regional Commission – You may already know that Mayor Roseberry
is famous, you may not know just how much. In August Mayor Roseberry was elected for a two
year term as Secretary for the governing council for the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission.
We’ve attached the newsletter with the announcement here.
→ Newton County Trail-Path Association – Dr. Florian Pohl is the chairman of Newton County
Trails. He is a professor at Oxford College and a resident of Oxford living on Emory Street just
north of City Hall. I’ve invited him to attend the September 16 work session to discuss with
Council several areas of mutual interest about the trails through Oxford.
→ Oxford College Recycling– Working as the middleman, we were able to facilitate an agreement for
Latham Sanitation to handle the outdoor single stream recycling for Oxford College. Please see the
enclosed emails from Mr. Raghu Patil with Financial Services at Oxford College(here). It’s nice when a plan
comes together.
→ Police Statistics – We have attached the summary Chief Harvey has prepared for August. It’s
the August Year to Date Comparison(here).
→ Newton County Senior Services, Inc. – I attended a briefing by Newton County Senior Services
Friday morning. Their budget is about $625,000 per year with $110,000 coming from an appropriation
from Newton County. About 6% of the people they serve live in the Oxford zip code. During the last
fiscal year they service 8,400 meals and had 42,000 visits to their programs by senior citizens. And, by
the way, senior citizens are those over 60 so that includes a bunch of us!
